Who are you?
I am Karen Hoffman the current Alderman of the 8th Ward in Rockford. From 2005 to December of 2010 I served on the Winnebago County Board. My husband is Joe Hoffman and he is the current Chairman of the Democratic Caucus for the Winnebago County Board serving the 14th District. I previously worked for the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Home. I went on to work for the Winnebago County Dept of Human Services. I also served in Belvidere and Elgin for a total of 34 years. I worked with low-income families as well as refugees and those affected by severe weather crises. I have served on the Community Action Board for a total of 17 years and the Head Start Board for 3 years. I am the co-founder and now President of the Rolling Green Neighborhood Association which we started in January of 2008 in response to 2 years of severe flooding and increased crime. I am also the current Board Chairman of the Rockford Housing Authority where I have served since 2013.
Why are you running?
I am running for a second term because there is still a lot of work to be done in my Ward. I have put into place multiple plans for road improvements and I want to make sure they are completed. I have worked to revitalize at least two areas of the Ward and a third area is planned for 2021.
What led you to this point in Rockford and your career?
I ran for Alderman of my Ward because we were not receiving the focus needed to revive our area after it was badly affected during the Recession of 2008.
What do you see as major issues in your ward?
There are still multiple areas that need attention but the two most important are roads/sidewalks and crime including traffic issues.
What do you hope to accomplish if you win?
It is my hope that at the end of my second term that most roads will be repaired and/or revitalized and that we will continue by working together to greatly reduce crime as well as speeding in all areas of the Wards.
Karen Hoffman, Candidate for Rockford City Council Ward 8
